About Our Academy

Our Academy is situated in Fishponds, a suburb of Bristol which is well known for its warm welcome and heart.

It has a real community feel to it, with numerous local shops and businesses. The centre of the city, with its wide range of historical sites, shops, art galleries and attractions is only a short trip away. The Academy enjoys a positive relationship with all members of the community including local secondary schools and academies and in particular with the two parishes of St Mary’s and All Saints, both in Fishponds.

Although we have children attending school from a wide range of faiths and of none, we have close links with the two churches and children visit the churches regularly.

The school itself was originally formed in September 2000 following the amalgamation of two former Church of England schools when some additions to the building were made. In September 2012 we became an Academy, changing our name from St Matthias and Dr Bell's CE VA Primary School to Fishponds Church of England Academy, one of the first Voluntary Aided Primary Schools  to become a sponsored Academy in the country.

We work close in a new partnership with the Diocese of Bristol and five other local primary academies within the Cabot Learning Federation: Frome Vale Academy (formerly Oldbury Court Primary School), Minerva Primary Academy (formerly Hillfields Primary), Summerhill Academy (formerly Summerhill Juniors), Wallscourt Farm Academy and Begbrook Primary Academy who also moved to become Academies in September 2012. Our links with the Cabot Learning Federation also include our nearest secondaries, Bristol Metropolitan, Bristol Brunel and John Cabot Academies amongst others.

We have a clear vision for improvement and a fresh sense of optimism and have made rapid improvements in order to secure the best possible outcomes for children in the years ahead. We are excited about our future and hope you will join us on that journey.

Facilities

Facilities include two multi-purpose halls and a number of mobile suites of laptop computers which allows whole class teaching throughout each age group. We have wireless access around the whole school grounds meaning we can be very flexible where we learn. We love to use our grounds to work in too! The school is well equipped with audio/visual aids, teaching resources, interactive whiteboards and we have desktop computers in all classrooms too.

We are blessed with expansive grounds and have a large field surrounding the school. We have a quiet area with seating and trees for summer shade as well as areas for basketball and football and climbing frames.

For use at lunchtimes, we have a fantastic PlayPod from the ScrapStore to help children's creative play and to ensure they have fun.

Both the Nursery and Reception classes have separate outside areas in which to play and learn. We have a fantastic new outside space just for reception which opened at the end of the spring term in 2012.

We have purchased the former Fishponds Library building which is available to hire. See the Old Library page for more information.
